PRESS RELEASE: Proposal for disarmament treaty
The Government of Serendip Belt would like to express its support for the recent statement by King Magnus of New Colchis. The political situation in the New Islands Subsector is indeed very tense following the recent coup on Esperanza, however any threat to ‘render inhospitable to man’ an entire planet must be seen as disturbing, however well intentioned. Serendip Belt is also a peace loving system, and would like to offer something more than mutually assured destruction to its neighbours. To this end we would like to propose a Clusters wide treaty, banning the research, development, construction or storage of so-called planetbusters, and also to limit the numbers of nuclear and meson weapons, which can be used in planetary bombardment, other than system defence sites. We feel that such a treaty would go a long way towards reducing tensions between sovereign states, and boost public confidence in all system Governments. We appreciate that there are many difficulties to be discussed before this can possibly come into effect, and it may be many years before such an agreement is reached. Therefore, in order to demonstrate our commitment to this plan, we will unilaterally reduce our stockpile of nuclear missiles by 50% over the next four years, and scrap plans to build two further Dispater class meson cruisers. As a more immediate measure, one hundred nuclear capable Naginata class ships will be decommissioned. We look forward to your replies and constructive comments about this proposal.
