Sansterre: History

4658-4706AD First Survey

The Sansterre system was first surveyed by the crew of the Voyageur from 4658-4706 AD. They discovered a system peculiarly rich in life bearing worlds. The star, which they named ‘La Mère’ for its fruitfulness, was orbited by three gas giant planets.

‘Treschaud’, the innermost of the life bearing planets orbits the second gas giant. The average temperature in its steamy jungles is 85°C; on warm days water boils.

Orbiting closely about the outermost gas giant is ‘Purgatory.’ This is a garden world, where it is possible for human beings to walk and breath without any artificial aids. Unfortunately, the combination of large oceans and tremendous seismic activity make this world unattractive to colonists, even if they weren’t put off by the fierce fauna.

This gas giant was named ‘Poseidon,’ god of the sea, because it is also orbited by the ocean world, which those early explorers named ‘Sansterre.’ Every day, huge tides flow around the planet, the seas attracted skywards by the huge bulk of Poseidon. What few islands there are amid the trackless oceans are flooded every day as this monstrous wave sweeps around the planet. While the tides make the ‘land surface’ uninhabitable, Sansterre’s oceans teem with life of all kinds.
